Our youth group and some of their families traveled to six cemeteries in Clay County on Thursday, May 15, 2025, to place American flags by the graves of veterans in recognition of the upcoming Memorial Day holiday. The cemeteries visited are Rhule Cemetery, Carpenter “100 Steps” Cemetery, Billtown Cemetery, Wools Cemetery, Lutheran German Cemetery, and Vest Cemetery.
As we walked through the cemeteries, we were reminded of the stories that are told just by reading the headstones. A family buried next to each other; a mother, father, and four children, two of which were infant burials. Tombstones engraved with the German language. Soldiers from the War of 1812, the Civil War, and both World Wars. It's also sad to see so many headstones that are weathered beyond readability.
Many have given their lives in service to our country, and we want to remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. On this Memorial Day, take a moment to honor our fallen service members and to pray for their families.
If you have a family member or friend who has died while serving in the military, feel free to honor them by commenting their name and branch of service, if known.
